Since the late 19th Century, quilting has been an important piece of tradition and history in Lancaster County, PA.
Although they were late to start, once the Amish began quilting, they quickly became an integral part of the community of these historic artists. The Lancaster Amish remained committed to rich, saturated, and more somber colors - deep turkey reds and stark blacks. The vivid contrast of milky cream-colored fabrics make a bold statement and were also characteristic of their quilting style.
As Amish women began to move from Lancaster to other parts of the country, the quilts became more colorful; however, the quilters of Lancaster remained true to their tenets.
