I think this was my first skirt, sewn a couple years ago. The wrap skirt pattern from this book (Simple Modern Sewing, which I do love) has some SIGNIFICANT mistakes in the pattern and its instructions. You have been warned!

If memory serves:

  1. It is not actually a wrap skirt, but rather a tube that is larger than your size so you can step into it, fold it, and do it up as a pseudo wrap skirt.
  2. The piece for the skirt yoke is too short, be sure to measure and extend to match the skirt (once pleated).
  3. The loop and tie system is a total mystery to me and didn't work one bit. I ended up having to improvise and adapt so it would work.
  4. I think the pleats' "centre" isn't actually centred and needs correcting on either the front or the back.
  5. The instructions are generally not detailed enough, and I didn't sew the yoke on properly, but I can't recall exactly why.
  6. The weird pseudo wrap and loop tie system does not actually keep the skirt wrap overlap well anchored (which is what the skirt depends on to stay up!) so I have to use a pin to actually keep it up.

All that said, I do wear this and I love it a lot - but if I hadn't used such a precious fabric, I may not have gone to such lengths to salvage it!

ps. I debated shortening it initially, but have grown to love the longer length - it's very nice when the sun it hot as it shields my legs well, and looks really classy I think!

Modifications

A load to accommodate for the pattern's mistakes and mysteries (see above).

Also, serged and then hand hemmed the bottom to keep the bulk down.
