From Thread Theory:

Wear these comfortable shorts to the beach, pool or gym. The drawstring waistband and side seam panels provide plenty of opportunity for contrasting or coordinating colour schemes. The mock fly and topstitched details elevate this project from just a quick sew. The legs are roomy with deep front slash pockets. The back pockets can be sewn as patch pockets with flaps or welt pockets.

These shorts can easily transition from the beach to town depending on material choice. Sew them as quick-dry surf shorts, comfy linen summer shorts, or in lighter breezy materials such as seersucker. The styling options are vast due to the woven or knit waistband variations.

Recommended Fabrics:

  • Daily wear shorts: Light to medium weight woven fabrics such as linen, cotton, seersucker, cotton and linen blends. Sturdy knit, woven or ribbing fabric for the waistband (or use self fabric for the waistband). Lightweight cotton or muslin for the pocket lining.

  • Beach cover up or active wear style shorts: Light to medium weight woven water repellent or water resistant fabrics such as polyester or nylon. Fabrics could have no stretch, slight stretch or 2-way stretch. Spandex or 4-way stretch fabrics will be too stretchy for this pattern. Optional: jersey mesh for pocket lining.

Sizes: A-C to HH-II
Waist 29-31" / 74-79 cm to 62-53" / 157-160 cm
Hip 37-39" / 94-99 cm to 70-71" / 178-180 cm

Notes re Sizing:

  • The Bamberton Shorts sewing pattern is the first to feature Thread Theory's new expansive grading system and size range (possible because it is only being made available as a digital pattern).

  • 1" Grade: Choose between extensive alphabetized sizes that allow for an easily customized fit due to the small difference between each size. Grading between the nested sizes is a simple matter of choosing the two size layers that you need and connecting the lines.

  • Expanded Size Range: Two separate patterns have been drafted for a smaller and larger size range (see the size chart below for details). This PDF pattern includes both of these size ranges! The same design is also available to suit straighter or men's proportions. Find the women's version here.
