I’m not sure how I can describe this sampler in just a few sentences, partly because it is more than a typical sampler. Collectors and avid stitchers can point to dozens and dozens of traditional Dutch Samplers, both antiques reproductions and “modern” antiques. On those, we find traditional motifs in many varied versions. Each of these motifs has a story or is a symbol of something - Adam and Eve, the Ten Virgins, Windmills, and Double-Headed Eagles.

On the Dutch Beast, each of the motifs has a story too. The Dutch Beast stories begin with the traditional stories, but end up in a very different place.

The chart pack includes a lengthy supplement with pictures and text providing the historical significance of each motif and explaining the spoofs.

It’s sure to keep you in stitches while it keeps you in stitches.

The sampler was done using Vikki Clayton’s Hand-Dyed Fibers on 40 count Vintage Navy Bean Lakeside Linen.

Design size is 248 x 308.
