From Forest & Thread:

Slim at the bust and extra wide at the hem, this little number has an undeniably beautiful construction. A classy keyhole opening allows for a comfortably close fit crew neck and princess seams offer some elongating vertical action to this confident beginner-level design kit.

You Will Learn:

  • French Seams
  • Flat Felled Seams
  • Exposed binding on curves
  • Keyhole opening construction
  • Learning to make your own bias tape (if you choose)
  • Staystitch
  • Edgestitch
  • Sewing a button with a thread shank

Fit Recommendations: The Float On Top fits closely from the neckline to the chest and then flares out for a dreamy, flowy swoosh. Along the bottom half of the top, there should be plenty of wiggle room for all sorts of dance moves. Choose your size based primarily on your high bust and full bust measurements, since those will be the most fitted part of your garment. If you fall in between sizes, choose the smaller size. There is plenty of ease so no need to worry! The vertical side seams do not rest on the side of your body, nor do they fall directly at a “true princess seam” placement. Bringing the side seam slightly more forward creates flattering style lines and accentuates the overall shape of the top.

Recommended Fabrics: The Float On Top will work in a wide variety of woven fabrications. The construction consists of a single layer of fabric on the front and back body with French seams and a double layer of fabric at the hem to add some extra weight as well as clean finishes. Light to mid-weight woven fabrics will work well. Choose a fabric with more drape for a more fluid garment and choose a fabric with more structure for a more architectural design. A stabler fabric will be more beginner friendly. Use a contrasting ribbon or bias tape for the neckline and armholes to draw attention to the lovely details or match the ribbon or bias tape for a minimalist, sophisticated look. You really can’t go wrong with what materials you choose for this top – it’ll look great in anything!
