From Joelle Hoverson:

This project is based on a vintage piece that I picked up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, several years ago. With a little research, I found out that it is called a puzzle ball. I smiled when I heard the name because my first attempt at copying the original turned out square! I didn't want to take original apart to figure out the pattern because I could see that someone had very lovingly hand-stitched the entire thing. One night, after thinking about it off and on throughout the day, the pattern came to me in a flash. I realized that the whole shape was made entirely out of circles! I dashed into my sewing room, where I just had to try it out. Well, it worked, and here it is, albeit slightly more refined.

Finished Measurements:

  • Approximately 5" diameter (book instructions for toy); or
  • Approximately 2½" diameter (online instructions for tree ornaments)
